Machete Coffee is a newish place offering Kiwi-Guatemalan food and coffees. It is between the old St George Hotel and St Mary of the Angels church. It offers breakfast tacos as well as more standard Kiwi fare such as crumpets, scrambled eggs, smashed avocado and maple muesli; and for lunch you can try enchiladas and other tacos.
The menu said house-made maple muesli with creamy yoghurt and poached seasonal pears. I was expecting some flavourless peeled pear slices on top of the muesli, but definitely not a whole (cored) pear as the feature! It was a striking and novel arrangement, though a little bit difficult to eat in a small bowl. Around the pear were chopped apple pieces and dried raspberries. Beneath this was the muesli and the whole sat on a bed of yoghurt wiped around the bowl.
I’m not usually a fan of the yoghurt wipe, because it tends to give you too little, but the quantity was just right here. So much so that I didn’t really need to use the milk to moisten the muesli.
It was a bit difficult to get a handle on the muesli itself, so buried was it under the fruit, but it seemed pretty good. Amongst the oats I spotted a small amount of dried fruit (figs and pawpaw), plenty of pumpkin seeds, and cashew nuts, walnuts and almonds. The oat grains were well toasted but I didn’t really taste sweetness from the maple syrup (a good thing in my book).
My companion had smashed avocado on sourdough toast. She was a bit surprised how generous the sprinkling of pumpkin seeds was. She also thought the avocado was starting to go slightly brown, a common problem with avocado these days in my experience.
People came and went for takeaway coffees while we were there on a weekday morning around 8am and a few others were sitting at tables. There was some music playing in the background but I was also struck by how quiet it was. No noisy espresso machine might have been part of it, though espresso was being made. I must check this out again. We enjoyed our coffees. I’ve had single origin filter coffee here before and it seems pretty good.
There is an array of seating options, from the long table and bench at front with stools to several tables and chairs opposite the counter, and a comfy area with padded seating and some armchairs and coffee tables at the back. Charlie the marketing manager sleeps in his dog pen opposite the counter (no patting allowed).
The website claims the cheese scones are one of the best in Wellington. Well, there are many claimants to that position. Guess I will have to try one at some stage, but the Guatemalan tacos seem more immediately tempting.
A good experience here all round. Pleasant environment, friendly and attentive staff, filter coffee, not noisy, and some pretty decent muesli that had me feeling ‘just right’.
